About this collection

Accessories, from the socks up

The accessories are what turn a kilt into an outfit. Start at the feet: kilt hose are worn turned down below the knee, held with garters and flashes, with ghillie brogues laced around the ankle.

At the waist, a kilt belt and buckle frame the sporran. On the front apron, a kilt pin adds weight to the free corner and a little decoration; it pins through the outer apron only. Above the waist, a kilt shirt or dress shirt, a tie and a Scottish hat complete the look.

For formal events, a fly plaid pinned at the shoulder with a kilt brooch adds ceremony, while a tartan sash lets women and children wear the family tartan. Tartan scarves make an easy gift in any tartan.

Common questions

Kilt Accessories FAQs

Where does the kilt pin go?
On the lower corner of the front (outer) apron, a few inches in from the edge. Pin through the outer apron only, never through both layers, or the kilt can tear when you move.
How should kilt hose be worn?
Pull the hose up and turn the top down so the cuff sits just below the knee. The garter goes under the turn-down, with the flashes showing on the outside of each leg.
What is a fly plaid?
A length of tartan pinned at the left shoulder with a brooch and left to hang behind. It is worn for formal events, weddings and pipe-band dress.
Which accessories do I need for a wedding?
A sporran, belt and buckle, kilt hose with flashes, ghillie brogues, a kilt pin and a white shirt with a bow tie or tie. Our kilt outfits bundle the main pieces together.
